What to Know Before Renting a Bike in Sedona

Before you hop on your rental, here are a few things to keep in mind about biking in Sedona:

Don’t underestimate Sedona’s heat and elevation

Sedona is situated at 4,350ft, which may come as a surprise to a lot of visitors. This means that if you’re used to breathing at sea level, you’ll probably find it harder to catch your breath here. Don’t head out for a 10+ mile mountain bike ride on your first day if you’re not prepared.

Same for the heat. I don’t recommend biking in Sedona during the summer because temps can easily top 100°. Even in the shoulder seasons of spring and fall temperatures can be pretty high. Bring lots of water and have a route planned before you set out. DOT NOT ride without water, a phone, and a plan.

Miles in Sedona are a lot harder than miles in other mountain bike destinations

There are a lot of punchy ups and quick descents in Sedona making it a very engaging destination for cross-country pedaling. This also means that the riding is quite a bit more physically tiring than other mountain biking destinations. Eight or 9 miles of mountain biking in Sedona may leave you quite worked, so be conservative when planning your ride.

Many trailheads require a day pass

Depending on where you’re biking, you may need to purchase a Red Rock Pass. There are fee stations at the trailhead parking lots where you can purchase one. If you have an American The Beautiful Pass, this can be displayed on your dashboard and there’s no need to purchase an additional Red Rock Pass.

E-bikes are not allowed on mountain bike trails

Sedona does not allow e-bikes on their trails. Please respect this. Thanks!
